About Us

Merrimac Community School (MCS) is a 4K-Grade 5 public elementary school serving over 130 students located in the Village of Merrimac. MCS has served Merrimac and surrounding communities for generations. A classroom and gymnasium addition was completed in 2020.

Located near Lake Wisconsin and Devil’s Lake, MCS is a place-based school that provides students with unique learning opportunities in areas of agriculture and environmental studies. Each day, students care for their animal friends with regular chores, feeding and caring for chickens, ducks and sheep housed on the school grounds.

Emphasizing State of Wisconsin and Sauk Prairie School District standards in literacy, mathematics, social studies and science, our certified teaching staff provides additional opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning as they care for the community garden with local Master Gardeners, the animals, the orchard and school forest. Students walk the Ice Age Trail, hike the paths of Devil’s Lake, actively learning about soils, rocks and water in the surrounding water systems.

Parent and community involvement is an integral part of this school. The MCS Governance Council consists of parents, teachers and community members and provides an opportunity to actively support the school goals and teaching staff in a range of ways. In addition, a very active Home and School Parent Organization supports much of the funding needed for the numerous curriculum-based field trips throughout the year along with generous donations from local businesses and individuals.
